candidates supervisor ahsha safai. e former mayor and supervisor mark farrell, philanthropist, daniel lurie, mayor london breed and supervisor aaron peskin with each candidate answering questions about key issues in the city. more than 800 overdose deaths were recorded last year. more than 80% involving fentanyl. each candidate explained what they would do to prevent more deaths. we need to aggressively arrest and prosecute fentanyl dealers. as mayor, i will declare a fentanyl state of emergency. it will allow us to pass the state and federal government for additional funds. >>to allow them to bring in additional law enforcement. we're spending 700 million dollars a year on our behavioral health system. >>we've so heavily to harm reduction, which i believe is part of the continuum care. it's very important, but we forgot about building the bats and treating people. there is no other mayor in any major city in this country that is doing what i am doing with the

various services that we are doing in order to help combat this issue. and we are seeing improvements in our city walk the beat with the captain of the tender line the other day. and he said a lot of our resources are going into the downtown. >>if you want to stop the drug trade, you've got to get the officers on the street after addressing drug dealers. candidates also described how they would make city streets safer for visitors and residents. my plan for public safety. >>i believe we need a new police chief. i believe we need restore the budget of our police department inside of city hall are seeing one of the lowest crime rates we've seen in 10 years and that crime rate is continuing to trend to this very day, including. >>a 50% reduction right here today in car break-ins. we a fully staffed police department. most of the officers in my district know the shopkeepers in the residents on their beats many of them by name. >>doesn't just keep people safe. it makes them feel safe. but what's been missing has been the leadership and the investment to recruit. if you don't invest in the

recruitment budget, you can't go out and get officers and all the other public safety personnel that we need. so how did voters feel after the debate tonight show? >>a lot because i really had no idea who i was going 4. so it helped a lot in my opinion might have changed. and i kind of staff i think it is. he was pretty solid guy. but aaron peskin did pretty well. and in but i still like london breed. >>that was kron four's. sara stinson reporting for us. all 5 candidates will meet again for another debate next monday night. kron four's terisa stasio will be moderating it. the debate is being put on by the san francisco democratic county central committee. it's scheduled to start at 07:30pm, at the university of california college of the law. san francisco, it's free and open to the public. we will, of course, be streaming it right here on kron on. the oakland city council has unanimously agreed to sell its 50% interest in the coliseum

complex to the african american sports and entertainment group. the 105 million dollars sale now paves the way to transform the site into a sports and entertainment destination. new businesses public open spaces and parks. the deal also requires a significant portion of any future residential units to be designated as affordable housing. the a's still have the other half of the interest. the team has yet to sell it. well, this report comes as oakland police have made several arrests in connection to sergeant home invasions, robberies and burglaries. they say one suspect is responsible for at least 4 home invasions in the highland park neighborhood back in april. >>it's been the suspect was just scooping out the area. he would just normally drive around park several blocks away and then walk to the locations that he wanted to burglarize. we're committed robberies at how he specifically identify those targeted residents. we don't know. >>a group of teens are in

juvenile hall as officers say the group. was responsible for more than 30 commercial burglaries and armed robberies. and was a ceremonial dance in the castro neighborhood in san francisco to pay respects to the 49 lives lost 8 years ago at pulse nightclub in orlando. activists say it's important to never forget. >>it's important to also honor the lives that were lost that day, they were many lost their lives. that reversal of aspirations dreams and runs families of careers and the missions, but also making sure that we bring attention to that tragedy to ensure that it does not happen again. >>after years of delays, plans are now underway in florida for a permanent memorial honoring those killed in that

says crime in oakland is down in the city. this comes after the state deployed chp officers. >>to the area as a part of a targeted crackdown on crime kron four's philippe gaulle spoke with business owners to get their reaction. >>33%. that is how much governor gavin newsom says crime has dropped in the city of oakland year-over-year. the statistic backed by numbers provided by the oakland police department. some business owners say they have noticed the difference setter police president is business owners just the normal human on the street getting smarter getting more saturday. that being money, grier owns roasted and raw and his downtown business. >>has been burglarized twice this year. numbers speak to the day-to-day life of oakland where the crime has kind of dissipated. the problem is the last night's from year to year. oakland, police say auto burglaries are down 60% commercial burglaries down.

man who worked as a therapist for children is now in jail. police say 48 year-old alejandra lopez nunez sexually assaulted a girl under the age of 14 kron four's. rob nesbitt spoke with san jose police about the details of their investigation. >>police say nunez worked as a therapist to children in an instructional aide at a san jose elementary school saying he sexually assaulted one of his young clients multiple time since march. this is the mug shot for 48 year-old alejandro lopez. nunez taken june 9th arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a young girl leaves a therapist for according to stacy. she with the san jose police department. a relative of the girl reported the assault they were able to

basically catch the suspect in the act. >>act of of sexually molesting or assaulting the victim. according to she, the girl was under the age of 14 and had special needs. nunez was working as the victims, behavioral therapist for trump behavioral health, making in-home visits. >>the company sent a statement wednesday saying they are disturbed and saddened by the allegations and that, quote, nothing is more important to us than the health safety and well-being of the children in our care. as soon as we were made aware of the incident, we took immediate action in cooperation with law enforcement, including terminating the employee and beginning an internal review. nunez also worked as an instructional aide at forest hill elementary school in san jose starting in 2022, the school district says he worked under the supervision of a teacher and that, quote, to our knowledge, the alleged behavior did not involve our students. the individual has not worked with our students since june 6, 2020 for the last day or students were in school. our district will be taking appropriate personnel action upon the conclusion of

supervisors have declared san francisco a sanctuary city for people who are transgender and gender nonconforming. the resolution goes into effect immediately. for more on this kron, four's justine waltman spoke with honey mahogany director of the office of transgender initiatives in san francisco. >>so why does it matter that the city makes this distinction? >>well, differences go. i think as long time been a mecca of sorts for the lgbtq community. and right now, specifically the transgender community is releasing an preston attacks. i'm really globally, actually, including here at the inn at home in the u.s.. and so we're seeing make people, i think over 50% of trans people across the country are considering moving to places where they feel more welcome where their health care is at risk families are moving to places where their children can access health care. so places like san

francisco, california, on their i think, are just making it clear that we want you here. you are welcome. so how does it change things in san francisco the bay area? you touched on the health care part there, but does it >>mean anything legally? well, i think it's a commitment from the board of supervisors. you know, the city has an incredible wealth of leaders, activists and also organizations that have really been at the cutting edge of providing services for the trans community. >>but the kent, as amazing as they are these trans led organizations and clinics, they can't do the work alone. and so it takes a lot of support from the city and county from the state to make. i'm sure that they are not just surviving but thriving. and as we see an increase of people who are coming here and we're already seeing that increase reflected in the number of people participating in some these we are going to need to supplement their funding. >>so there are other cities like sacramento in west hollywood. they've also just cleared themselves. these trans sanctuary cities. but san francisco's the first major city to do this. do you think it will inspire other

communities to take on the same initiative? >>absolutely. i mean, you know, san francisco has oftentimes been at the forefront of these types of initiatives. and we're still the only city in the country that has an office of transmission as far as i now but we have seen a lot of the things that we do here. catch on everywhere else. do you think this gives them hope? absolutely. i mean, you know, again, i'm in contact people from all over the country who are considering moving and, you know, even the fact that we have an office of trans initiatives that we have a trance cultural district, that we have organizations like lane martin, which is a trans lead tran serving medical and health really gives people especially right now. you know, we're seeing depression and suicidality increase amongst our young people. we're seeing more people getting bullied in high schools and beaten bathrooms. so seeing affirming messages seeing city stand up and saying we're going to stand for the trans community that is under attack right now gives people hope not just here in san francisco but all across the country. and it's

happening during pride month. that must give you some pride that your city >>taking on this initiative and protecting transgender people. what was your reaction when you heard that the board of supervisors voted unanimously on this? >>yeah, it was very exciting. you know, i grew up here in san francisco. i'm san franciscan, born and raised. i've always been very, very proud of my city improv to say that. you know, i was at the meeting, got to hear that supervisors, you know, unanimously support this resolution it just reaffirms my faith and my pride. my city. >>honey, mahogany, the director for the office of transgender initiatives in san francisco. thank you so much for joining us here this afternoon. always appreciate talking to you and thank you for your time. thanks for having me. >>the new public safety tool is helping the city of san francisco battle crime. and at times it's hidden in plain sight. we're talking about the new automated license plate reader cameras that are going up throughout the city. officials say they're already seeing positive results from fortaleza good has more.

>>since april, the city of san francisco began installing these automated license plate camera readers, a total of 100 are active right now. and 300 more will go online in july bay area in different jurisdictions. they put out information. we can type it into our license plate reader and make models of cars whether they have license plate or not. and >>they will ping us the information and different intersections in the location. mayor london breed says the cameras have provided vital information resulting in arrests in cases including assault, retail theft, carjacking and robbery. >>when it comes to those who have privacy concerns. the mayor has this to say goal is not to invade somebody's privacy. >>but at the end of the day, we need this type of technology in these type of tools in order to protect the public. and there are tradeoffs when you want a safe society in using 21st century technology, it's going to be an important part of that.

election headquarters. it has been 10 years since california voters approved prop 47. it's a law supporters say resulted in criminal justice reform. but opponents blamed for rampant retail theft. now voters will decide its fate. this election capitol correspondent eytan wallace has the details. >>applause and celebration from these organizers after their proposed ballot measure known as the homelessness, drug addiction and reduction act seeking a change prop. 47 officially qualified for the november ballot. >>we'll make a huge difference in california will make california safer. greg totten helped author the newly qualified initiative he believes prompt. 47 made the state less safe by changing certain nonviolent crimes from felonies to misdemeanors. >>including theft when the items stolen are valued at less than $950. prop 47 supporters say it reduced the prison population and created criminal justice reform. but

opponents say it emboldened criminals to take part in certain crimes like retail theft, with little to no punishment, most citizens have seen someone going to a store and steal most citizens are encountering. >>locked up products and a struggling with that on a daily basis. 47, there's big share of the responsibility for those problems we want to fix up. that's why he says his initiative to reform prop. 47 includes an option to classify repeated theft as a felony. if someone is found to have taken part in theft after 2 prior theft convictions, the initiative would also increase penalties for thieves found to have caused at least $50,000 in losses. and it would combine the values of items stolen by the same person which could lead to increased to jail time. >>bottom line, we want change. we demand change. >>the measure would also add fentanyl to the list of hard drugs like heroin and cocaine and would enable stricter penalties for fentanyl dealers, something fresno mother, pamela smith says is crucial. her son jackson died
